Choosing The Right Dog Collar

There are a variety of dog collars to choose from. How do you know which one is right for your dog? It depends on the type of dog that you have. If you have a strong dog, he will require a collar that gives you extra control when necessary. A nylon, cotton or leather neck collar is fine for your dog to lounge around in. But when you are taking him for a walk, you need to assess the right collar for him. It is also important to make sure that your dog’s collar fits properly. You don’t want the collar too loose or it may slide off his head. You also don’t want the collar too tight around his neck for obvious reasons. A proper fitting collar means that you should be able to fit two fingers between his neck and his collar.
• Dog harnesses are good for dogs with upper respiratory, throat or trachea problems. This collar will not put pressure around his neck, like a traditional collar will.
• Halter collars give you the best control for walking your dog. They are designed similar to a horse harness.
• Chain collars are good for strong willed dogs when used correctly. For the correct length, measure your dogs neck and add 2 ½” to 3”.
• Pronged collars are used with the most stubborn dogs as a temporary tool and must be used with caution.
Do not leave your dog unattended with any of these collars on, except for the traditional collar. For more information, go here!
